Burning money on computer stuff:

I burnt some money on new computer toys to play with while I'm at home for the rest of my vacation:

• A new LiteOn 761S computer case with a 400W power supply, fan, front USB connectors, drive cage enhancements and a side CPU exhaust tunnel. The case is running much quieter and the surface of the case is cool to the touch which means the ventelation is working excellently.
• A bright pink cold cathode light mounted to the top of the new case that has two modes of operation: always on and sound response.
• It could be set up to turn on when ever the computer speaker beeps but I chose to put the activator on the outside of the case to respond to noise in the room.

• A 256mb USB compact flash pen drive. I have partitioned it in to a Linux reiserfs and a FAT32. The reiserfs is bootable and has grub installed on it right now. I'm working on installing a distribution on. I put Mozilla 1.3, OpenOffice 1.1beta and Java Virtual Machine 1.4.1_rc2 on the FAT32 side. I'll probably drop JEdit, CGoban2, Flash plugin and FileZilla on there too. The plan is to always have this with me so I can troubleshoot on the fly and evangelize Mozilla, too. Having a bootable Linux in your pocket is so uber-geeky.
• A 80GB Western Digital hard-drive with 8MB cache (used in writing only). Here is the output of hdparm for my old drive and new one:
root@athena clintonj # hdparm -i /dev/hda

/dev/hda:

root@athena clintonj # hdparm -i /dev/hdb

/dev/hdb:

RawCHS=16383/16/63, TrkSize=57600, SectSize=600, ECCbytes=40
BuffType=DualPortCache, BuffSize=8192kB, MaxMultSect=16, MultSect=16
CurCHS=16383/16/63, CurSects=16514064, LBA=yes, LBAsects=156301488
IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:120,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120}
PIO modes: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
DMA modes: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2
UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 udma4 *udma5
AdvancedPM=no WriteCache=enabled
Drive conforms to: device does not report version: 1 2 3 4 5

I thought that the new drive would have more features and be faster but as you can see, the new drive doesn't support as many DMA modes, it doesn't report some compliance information and it's ECC byte setting indicates that the manufacturer doesn't trust the drive logic as much as Maxtor does. So, I'm keeping the 60GB as my primary and the 80GB will be for DVD ripping, pr0n and OGGs.
• A new 1.44 mb floppy drive.
