KWin splendor

Okay, ignore the fact that there's about a thousand spin-controls and settings you can fiddle/fuck-things-up with. But in all seriousness, this blog entry on KWin's newer compositing features is quite impressive.

Well, I agree that it is (kind of) impressive what the KWin devs coded in about 6 month. But, anything really useful? I'm not sure. I switched back from Compiz to Metacity because Compiz took too much RAM and also and mostly because there's nothing I really miss when "only" using Metacity...

yeap, but using Kwin you can turn on/off compositing in a few seconds. Also because compositing in kwin is an extension for kwin-core RAM usage - based on my experience, compaq laptop, ibm chip - is really acceptable.
And the best thing here is that kwin-compositingTurnON has all useful features of kwin-compositingTurnOFF, in contrary to compiz lack of normal metacity features.

And also with KDE4.2 you have compositing out of box when your PC is capable (autodetection), which is quite nice.

We could say a lot of bed words about KDE4.0 but 4.2 is quite impressive. And Kwin is a really good example of kde4 maturity. I tried to by impartial here :)
