gnome-pilot Nightmares

Pardon, if some of my Treo 700p anger carries over to this post. And actually it's only partially a nightmare.

The gnome-pilot software is poorly in need of some love and attention. Here are the things I have encountered with trying to get it to work with my Treo Smartphone in the last 24 hours.

  • Despite being compatible, none of the Treo Smartphones (600+) are in the devices.xml file. That means the file is lagging by about 2.5 years.
  • gnome-pilot doesn't understand that /dev/pilot can change its link pointer if udev assigns a different /dev/usbTTY{1,3} to the attached Palm. This requires that the gpilotd daemon be restarted (sometimes means kill -9) every time the device is re-attached or rebooted.
  • gnome-pilot-applet will freeze if there's some kind of problem with gpilotd
  • gpilotd frequently crashes or hangs on hotsync (kill -9 required)
  • no way to GUI access gnome-pilot-control except through Evolution menu
  • no way to GUI access .PRC install
  • sync status screen only occasionally shows up even though sync is working
  • several HIG violations (Ok, Cancel)

I will open bugs for all of these if they aren't already.
