good intro to a can of worms
That's a good basic look at the philosphy of perception. There are other views, as well (which I can't remember off the top of my head).

And of course, the whole thing quickly spirals out of control, because to answer questions of perception, it is natural to look at what is doing the perceiving - the mind. The philosophy of mind is a gargantuan subject. And then of course, from the other end, once we percieve something (or believe something) how do we know it's true? That's the question of epistemology - the philosophy of knowledge.

Philosophy is an extremely important and fascinating group of subjects, but unless you have a very large amount of time and patience, it quickly becomes intimidating and incomprehensible. Everything leads to everything else. Or to complete skepticism.
